She was pacing in front of the bed. She had been for the last hour. It was nearly two in the morning, and I was fucking exhausted, but she was having a meltdown. Again. I barely held in my sigh as she chewed her thumbnail, her brows bunched in worry and guilt.

“I shouldn’t have done it,” she muttered. “We shouldn’t—”

“Darling,” I sighed, but she ignored me.

“I’m a cheater,” she said around her thumb. “I can’t believe I cheated on my husband.”

“It’s not like you two had the best marriage anyway. It was going to fall apart eventually.” She paused, and slowly, she turned to face me. Her eyes were wide, her thumb secured between her teeth.

“You don’t know that,” she said. “We could’ve worked it out—” I scrubbed my hands over my face as I inhaled sharply.

“Then go work it out,” I snapped. “If you want to be with a man who said he’d rather you be fucking dead than agree to my terms, then go back to him.” She blinked at me.

I was done codling her. I was done trying to make her feel better about what we’d done. It made me feel like total shit that she felt guilty about us. Not because she was guilty, but because she regretted what we’d done. What we’d shared. And it wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair that I was finally falling for someone after all these years, and she was pushing and pulling me around.

I was mad.

I was hurt.

I was sad.

“Is that what you want?” she asked, and I groaned.

“I want whatever you want,” I said. “If you don’t want me, then tell me that now because I’m not going to play this game with you. If you want to work shit out with Blackwell, then go. Leave. Stop dragging me around. It hasn’t even been twenty-four hours and whatever the fuck this is,” I waved my hand between us, “is already more stressful than it should be.”

Her throat bobbed as she swallowed. “You’re saying I’m more work than you want.” I blinked at her, then laughed humorlessly.

“You’re putting words in my mouth,” I said. “I said whatever the fuck is going on with us is stressful. I never said you were too much work.”

“But it’s stressful because I’m trying to deal with everything. It’s stressful because of me. And you don’t want to—”

“Stop talking,” I said as I pushed to my feet. “Stop fucking talking.” She was silent behind me as I walked to the door. I leaned my hands on it, my head hanging.

I needed to get my head on straight.

She was my enemy’s wife, yes. But also, whatever the fuck I felt for her was a lot more than I’d felt for anyone in my entire life. Not love, not yet. But could it be? Yeah, one day.

Could I see her walking these halls with paint splattered all over her clothes and smeared across her face? Her hair in a messy bun like it was now? Yes, absolutely.
